Summary Description: Columbia University's Department of Anesthesiology and the School of Nursing are seeking a Pediatric Pain Management and Perioperative Care Nurse Practitioner (PPMPCNP). The PPMPCNP will provide direct care to a diverse pediatric patient population in a tertiary pediatric hospital. Responsibilities include:Pain Management:1. Perform inpatient consultation in collaboration with the pediatric pain attending physician. 2. Perform assessment of patients by taking problem-oriented histories as they relate to issues of pain and perform physical examinations, incorporating all relevant clinical data including laboratory and diagnostic data3. In collaboration with pediatric pain attending physician, develop a problem-oriented plan for diagnostic, therapeutic and medication modalities relevant to pediatric pain patients followed by the pain service, and document the management plan in the medical record4. Perform daily rounds and follow-up on pediatric pain patients5. Prescribe medications including controlled substances, devices, and other medications within New York State and Federal scope of practice law for nurse practitioners6. Perform and/or assist with approved procedures, including, but not limited to: a. assist anesthesiologists with insertion of epidural catheter b. perform medication boluses via epidural catheter c. removal and dressing changes for epidural catheter d. intravenous bolusing of analgesics via patient controlled analgesia7. Initiate recommendations for referrals to other health care providers and/or consulting physicians for further definitive therapy8. Conduct appropriate follow-up of patients as needed9. Provide education to pediatric pain patients and their families regarding pain treatment 10. Participates in staff education regarding all aspects of pediatric pain management for nursing staff 11. Assist pediatric pain attending physician in education and training of housestaff Preoperative Assessment and Planning:1. In collaboration with Pediatric Anesthesia faculty, perform assessment and risk stratification of pediatric patients for anesthesia care2. Review available medical records and request additional clinical information, including medical record, consultation notes, laboratory data, as needed3. Contact primary surgical/medical service to make appropriate planning and preparation for intra-operative anesthesia care and post-operative care. 4. Perform post-operative rounds following procedure and anesthesiaQuality Assurance and Continuous Quality Improvement:1. Perform essential activities related to QA in Divisional electronic anesthesia QA database.2. Makes twice daily PACU rounds with fellows and faculty to collect and review QA events in PACU.3. Assist in the preparation of quarterly divisional QA report 4. Enter PACU QA data into anesthesia QA database5. Perform random check of database data entry to assure accuracy and reliability6. Meet at regular intervals with PACU nursing personnel to discuss QA/QI issues and compliance with PACU QA data collection7. Participate in monthly divisional M&M presentation 8. Participate in Divisional QA/QI Committee meetingsThe PPMPCNP will work Monday through Friday, 12pm - 8pm or 1pm - 9pm.
Minimum Qualifications: Successful candidates will have a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with national board certification as a pediatric or family nurse practitioner. Excellent oral & written communication skills, strong analytical abilities and problem-solving skills are required. A NYS Pediatric or Family Nurse Practitioner License and DEA are required. At least 3 years of experience is required. Experience with pediatric patients also required.
